Have you been beating the pavement every day? Have you looked over every possible job ad in the newspaper? Have you tirelessly searched for work online? If so you may be out of your mind with frustration from the fact that you still have no job! For some people, it seems that no matter how hard they work to get to work, nothing is turning up. There is an endless sea of possibilities of why you have not yet gotten a job. Some of the reasons are beyond your control, but many are not. The thing you must do is examine yourself, your resume, and how you go about communicating with potential employers.
1: Qualifications
The bottom line about qualifications is if you do not have them, do not apply! Many people overlook specifically stated qualifications (yet another reason they are not hired; attention to detail). Take this job ad for instance:
Wanted:
Private Duty Certified Nursing Assistant
Must have current CNA license, current CPR certification, 5 years on the job experience, and experience with dementia patients.
Please send Resume to PO Box 8574, NY, NY 10002
The above ad is very particular and will get many responses. If you do not have all the things listed above, do not bother to apply. Do not think that simply 3 years of on the job experience will work. Do not think that you can use your Grandma as the referenced dementia patient. The only thing you can get around is your CPR license. If you do have one but it is out of date, you can still apply but be ready to take the class ASAP. Other than that, do not bother applying. It is a waste of your time and the employers. Bottom line-if you KNOW that you are not qualified for the position, don’t bother. This is probably the number one reason why you are still unemployed. We all want good jobs, but shoot for the openings for which you possess the right qualifications and you will see more results.
2: Too Many Applicants
Even if you are unemployed, you still have a job – looking for a job! That is a job in itself! If you stay on top of things then you have a much better chance of getting a job. However, if you only look every now and then you are very likely to miss something good. By looking at all of your job search outlets every day you will be sure to see new jobs just as they crop up. This way you can apply as soon as you see the opening is available. If you only look every few days, by the time you find something you are qualified for, the employer may already have 100 applicants. With that many people applying for one job, chances are they will never get to application 100 – so stay on top of things!
3: Appearance
Most people put real thought into what they wear to their job interviews. This is definitely a good thing. However, you should really think about the job, what profession you are in and what you would be expected to wear to work if you are hired. Take all these things into consideration when choosing your outfit. Also, make sure to shave, comb that hair and look the part of an eager job seeker! If you have gone to many interviews but are still jobless, think of how you are presenting yourself to potential employers. Ask for the advice of others to assess your interview appearance. You may not even know that you are doing anything wrong!
4: Communication
Communication is the key in all areas of life. A potential employer does not want to have to pry information out of you. However, you do not want to be a big chatter box either. You have to find a balance between the two. When you are asked a question, do not babble on and on, but do give a through answer. Simple yes and no’s won’t cut it during an interview. Be forward with your communication and this will get you a long way. Sitting there waiting to be lead through the entire process word by word will get you nowhere.
5: Being Prepared
If you do not heed any other advice in this article, heed this – BE PREPARED. There is no better way NOT to get hired than by going to an interview unprepared. Know every detail about the job. Know what types of answers you will likely be asked (this information can be found online in our article database) and know as much as you can about the company you are interviewing with. If there were specific instructions given before the interview date, make sure you follow them to a T. If you are not prepared, I can promise you that there are 50 more people that will be!
Good luck and treat your job hunt like what it is – A JOB!
